Recently was able to trace my maiden name, Young, back to Andrew Lamont Young. I was always interested where the family name originated since my generation was given the impression we were from Ireland but I well know Young was a common English name.

It has been really interesting learning all the history behind the family name. It was nice to hit something with deep history, much easier to research.

I am interested in what DNA test people have done, I saw some talk about it on the boards.

My Young family comes from CA by way of Logan County KY.

Welcome to the Clan.

I have taken most of the DNA test that Family Tree DNA has to offer.

They are

mtDNA:
mtDNA Plus and mtFull Sequence.  This test DNA passed from only the mother to both male and female children.

Y-DNA’s:
Y-37, Y67, and The BigY, these test only show DNA passed from Father to son.

Family Finder:
This test is for everyone, it is not gender specific.

Thank you.

I was researching and came up with the Family Tree version also. I like they don't ask you to share the results with 3rd parties.

I would like to do the family finder and eventually make my Dad take the Y :)

My top matches are Lamonts, Browns, Lamond and a couple of others.

one thing with DNA testing is to keep a open mind, the results may show things you never knew about.

Thank you for the welcome LaCalif.

Super8mm-  I am very interested in DNA testing for that very reason, to get an open minded idea.

Paternally it seems majorly Irish/Scottish and German. Maternally we have Irish, and a large part Portuguese but we know nothing about my Great Great Grandfathers Father and little about his Mother.

I ordered the book "The Clan Lamont" and can't wait for it to get here so I can devour it.

It intrigues me what a DNA test would show.

I found my mother and father using adoption records and Ancestry but used Family Tree DNA for the proof.

I found my mothers family in 2012 and we had a big family reunion to introduce me to everyone.

Last December I found a lady on my fathers side to do the DNA test and we showed up as 3rd cousin matches which is correct as her great grandmother and my grandfather were brother and sister

The book is a real snoozer so be ready. As one old member told me "it does keep the table cloth from blowing away" It is for the avid reader. Since I have world wide Ancestry would you share your family (like ggmother/ggfather) full names and where they might be from. I would start with your parents name and locations as best you can and then I might be able to glean a bit of information for you.

Been offline for a bit, just seeing your response.  The book is a big task, I haven't had a chance to delve into it but I am a bit of a history geek so I'm sure I will get through if I can get started.

I just sent off a 23 and Me DNA test so I should have that back with haplogroups in about 4-5 weeks.

I was able to trace my paternal line back to the Lamonts and Youngs in the !400's. I would have to look where I got stuck. I have access to Ancestry.com

My paternal Great Grandfather was Xury Garland Young and my Paternal Great Grandmother was Katherine Hester. I know my Great Grandfathers family had some deep roots in Logan County KY.

If we have it correct my ancestor that would have migrated from Ireland to America would have been John L. Young born 9 JAN 1737 Antrim,Ireland

The Young/Lamont side isn't nearly as hard as my McBride side.... I am stuck on my 5th GG father.

It took some time to find the connection for my Young/Lamont side out of the US but once I did it blew up from there. I had started looking with the intention to find out which stock we came from since there seems to be a line of Youngs from England. I set out to see one way or the other if we came from Ireland or not. I was surprised to find it was actually Scotland. I am much more Scottish and Irish than I ever imagined. I am very antsy to get my DNA results back.

The one I am stuck on is Caleb Lammon (1794-1855) born in NY

I am no help there. Mine are all Young's until I hit Andrew Young Lamont, who was Sir John Lamonts youngest son who took on his mothers maiden name after fleeing Scotland from the Cambell Clans siege on Toward Castle.

Its hard with all the name changing and mis spells in census records. The versions I found of Xury were comical.

2 of my closest DNA matches are cousins by the name of Lamont, as far back as they have found is 1794 to a William Lamont in Ballygoney No Ireland. one of they is close enough that there is a 94% chance we have a common relative in the last 200 years. That would mean that my Caleb and their William were closely related

Because I am an ancestry geek I was looking it up and if I found your Caleb it looks like his wife was a McCoy. That is interesting.

Yes that was one of his wifes, the other seems to be Bethia Ladd but there is some confusion there too.

some say he married Bethia the same year she passed away??

also found one record where Caleb was listed on a death certificate of a Frankz Lammon (6/30/1818-5/17/1899) but Franks shows on no other records. in looking at his 3 sons that do show up none of the spellings are close and no years match. This guy was also from Kalamazoo Mi where the rest of the family was from.

Strange and confusing.

Ancestry is definitely frustrating as much as it is intriguing

I found Ancestry to be supremely aggravating.

A cousin of mine some years back did the digging on the McLuckies.  She was retired from the Marines and had the time to investigate.  I just don't.
