I am not a whisky drinker. It's fine if it's carefully cooked into something. (Maybe a bread pudding?) But I don't like it "neat" or on the rocks or anything. (Okay, I might be persuaded to take a half o' wee dram in my coffee but I'd just as soon have coffee with Bailey's!)
At any rate, if you ever find yourself on the misty Isle of Skye, do check out the Talisker plant on Loch Harport near Carbost. (Distillery tour website is at http://discovering-distilleries.com/talisker )
The distillery visitor info. centre and shoppe are pretty cool and of course you get a taste or two of the product if you are of a certain age. My mom and I have MacAskills in our family tree and an interest in the area due to our Lamont (and related) roots. So it was neat to browse through the list of some of the workers names from the 1800s and read about the history of the place.
I know that not all whisky imbibers like Talisker -- some think it too peaty/smokey -- but it's the only distillery on Skye and it's a lovely drive. There's even a place across the way (by the water) for a picnic lunch . . . with your wee dram!
Just spent four days on Skye this recent trip. I never had the time to stop in there with everything else I had planned to do in the island. Skye is hands down our favorite place to spend time in Scotland.
