A Lecture on The Civil War
Permalink

Mary Lamb (Sec/Tres. CLS) has graciously donated an original copy of a document entited:

lecture.jpg

I admit I have not read the entire lecture as it is quite lengthy but the portions I have read are stirring. One of the most facinating aspects are that the lecture was delivered in 1864 before the outcome of the war could be known. James does some interesting speculation about the outcome near the end of the lecture. Also, James had very strong personal feelings about the cause and effect of the conflict which comes through with passion.

My personal feeling is that this document is a clan treasure and it will be carefully protected and preserved. Having said that I will be transcibing the text into a digital format for everyone to read and enjoy.

Many thanks to Mary Lamb who donated this believing that it would be most special to those of us here in the United States. She is truely a treasure of our clan herself.

I leave you with the preface of the lecture:

PREFACE:

This Lecture was written at sea last winter, while I had not access to books of reference, which must be its excuse for many imperfections but I believe the facts will be found correctly stated.

I wish to add, that subsequent events, and particularly the almost unanimous re-election of Mr. LINCOLN, have confirmed my belief that this war can only terminate in one way, viz., by the entire suppression of the insurrection, and the consequent emancipation of the slaves.

J. L.

December 7, 1864

Here is the link to my web site where I have already transcribed this article.

It is a very interesting view of the US civil war. James Lamont of Knockdow was the father of Sir Norman Lamont.

Thanks David and George for this!  Most interesting.

And David I quite agree about Mary.  I think we should bundle her up some day and bring her to the states.
