I received this basic email after the distribution of The Wee Harp for May, 2009. I always thought a sporran was the pocket(s) the kilt never had, whether for men or women. Just wondered.
Hello Mr. and Mrs. Brown.
Thank you for emailing me the May issue of, “The Wee Harp”. Keep up the good work! We thoroughly enjoy it!
I do have somewhat of a concern pertaining to a picture I saw on page 3, upper right corner. If I am correct, there is a woman in a kilt complete with sporran and belt/buckle. I find this very odd and disturbing to me. I wish for once men can have and or wear something that women do not want to wear.
I am very proud of my Lamont kilt but if women begin to wear the kilt even complete with a sporran, etc., I feel that I will give wearing my kilt a little more thought. I just hope this is something that will not become a common thing.
...but purses that resemble sporrans are ok as long as they are not worn around the waist? I don't want to ruffle any feathers and I believe in traditions. I am just wanting clarification. If a woman is in a kilted dress, billie kilt or the like, she is not violating any rule as long as she doesn't sport a sporran? What if she carries the afor mentioned purse that looks like the sporran ( the type made by Donnie at Wyvern or Turpin at Thorfinn) over her shoulder?
Are these rules/standards part of some ancient doctrine? Once more please don't take this the wrong way, I am not intending to be rude. I f I come across as such I apologize. I am simply wanting to understand.
My personal opinion ( which isn't worth much ) is I really don't care either way. I like kilts, and regardless if it comes and goes in fashion, or women start doing it more will not affect my kilt wearing.

I think the sporran purses for women look great, it doesn't make any difference what the women wear, at least I know who is interested in their Scottish Heritage, if they wear some article of clothing that would give me a clue.
Most of the women I see in kilts with the bellts, waist plates and sporrans are in pipe bands.
