Great job, on the Cane and Pins.Do you free hand the design, or use a template to start with, and is it hard to work with White Ash? I've done a little carving in the past, nothing to brag about but am interested in the level of dificulty with different woods. Again great job, you must be proud of your work.
In my opinion, cedar ( western red) is the best carving wood. Usually a wood that has a dense, smooth feel to it will be easier to carve that a fiberous type of wood. The thing that makes alot of people think that they can't carve is tools. I fell into the same trap of going out and picking up a substandard set of tools and when they didn't want to cut or hone properly I thought it was because of my being new to the art, when in fact it was 98% crap tools. SHARP TOOLS ARE A MUST!!!! ( Helvie Knives, Flex-Cut gouges) .
