In the March/April 2009 edition of Highlander Magazine there is an article written by Bowen Pearse entitled "The Lamont-Campbell Clan War of 1646".  This article is written from a different historical perspective than any of the history I have seen.

Have any of you seen or read this article?

Thanks Jim for the reminder.  I've had my copy for a few days now and have not had the time to open in yet.

George, it is an excellent magazine, well written and usually presents unbiased viewpoints.

As many of you know we already reprint several Highlander Magazine articles as part of our standard arsenal of literature. I'm sure (hoping) that in the past someone contacted and was granted permission to reprint those articles.

If it's as good as has been stated I'll contact Highlanders media relations and see what it will take.

great article, good coverage of both sides of the centuries long squabble. Thanks David

I have seen lots written that religion was the cause but I don't think that was it. The reformation was well underway and both side had many people on both sides of that issue. I think it was two families living closely together for centuries with lots of intermarriages in both directions. Like a giant game of chess, who could marry more hieresses and grab title to the land or wealth.

I still contend that we Lamont's have no idea how those Campbell sheep crossed our fence rows and fell into our Bar - B - Que pits. Stupid Campbell sheep  sheesh and we get all the blame because they wanted to end it all in a tasty method? biggrin

Well we got a very polite no from Highlander Magazine.

Dear Mr. Patton:

Thank you for your kind words — I will pass them along to Bowen Pearse as well.

It wouldn’t make business sense for us to give the article away — I hope you understand. But if any of your members would like a copy of the March/April issue, they can write to us at the address below. It sells for $7, including first class postage. Alternatively, if any of your members subscribe now, that issue could be included as part of the annual subscription price. Members can telephone 800 607-4410 to subscribe or do it online at HighlanderMagazine.com

Thanks again for your note; we are delighted to know we struck a responsive note with Clan Lamont!

Best wishes,

Neill Kennedy Ray
Editor & Publisher
The Highlander Magazine

That being said, we tried and it's still a fantastic publication. Anybody who doesn't subscribe should.

Hi folks
It was last year that Bowen Pearce contacted me about an article he was writing for the Highlander. I supplied him with the pictures and some of his material for the article. I have his copy of the article which I thought was different but good. Didn't think it would cause such a stir amongst us Lamonts.
Bowen is an author and photographer.
About two years ago a lady author contacted me for information about the Lamonts for an article for the highlander mag. I never heard from her again. I too subscribe to the mag.
Best wishes from
Mary Lamb
Secretary CLS Scotland

We do love it when anything about our Clan is discussed in the media or published since it's such a rare event.

Mary are you saying that his copy varies from the published version? Any chance I can take a glance at it when I meet you this summer? biggrin

Thanks Mary for supporting the article! That's what we love about you!

Hello David

I read the article with much interest. Then I read it again.

I could of course be totally wrong here, but perhaps you or someone else could check my logic. If I understand correctly, the good Mr Pearse would have us believe that the Lamonts, who supported Montrose shortly after the execution of Charles I in 1949, went on a spree of deceit, murder and mayhem directed mostly at Campbells.

So he seems to be suggesting that the Campbells, in 1946, were merely taking revenge for events that are alleged (not proven in a court of law) to have taken place some 3 years later.

Perhaps I've missed something?

Sandy

I have seen this instance written before about this dark side of the Lamont history.
The Lamonts like many other Scottish clans loved to fight, if we did not have any English (sorry Sandy) to kick around we fought amongst ourselves. There are several recorded instances of Lamont aggression but never to the numbers of that June date in 1646 by the Campbells.

We had the entire Cowal peninsula from very early in the Dalriada invasion. As time moved on it became more crowded (insert here - Campbells moving in). Just as today, the closer quarters we human occupy.... the more violence. It also was family quabbles since the Lamonts and Campbells had many marriages in both directions that lead to lands being exchanged via inheritance of daughters shifting to the other side.

In raping up my blabbering, I don't feel we are totaly innocent. We picked very often the losing side (not the wrong side) in Scottish Politics and paid the price to the more politically astute Campbells

Och Laddie

Ye surelie dinnae think ahm a sassenach the noo?

Sandy is about as Scots as it gets, along with Jock, Hamish (my son's name) and Dugal.

But getting back to the article. ..There's no doubt that the Lamonts committed some pretty dark deeds. What I'm getting at though is that the article seems to claim that the Campbell's deeds of 1946 were in revenge for Lamonts' deeds of 1949.

Now lateral thinking is one thing...
