Does anyone have any information about Luckey, Lucky, Luckie or its other variations and its relation to Clan Lamont. I do know that my surname and McLucas, Luck, Mac Lucais and Luc to name a few are connected.

McLucas is listed in "The Lamont Clan" 1235-1935

Ken

I am keeping a list of any info I find on Septs of Lamont, someday these clues will mean something??

here is the earliest not I have found about your line

Lucas

Buchanan of Auchmar, who was the first seannachie of the Lamonts to end up in print, assembled a list of the septs of the Lamonts, recognized in 1723. These were -

McLucases or Lukes
McInturners or Turners
McAlduies or Blacks
McIlwhoms
Towarts

yes I had to look up what Seannachie meant

Sean´na`chie

n.1.A bard among the Highlanders of Scotland, who preserved and repeated the traditions of the tribes; also, a genealogist

I was able to find in, "The Lamont Clan" 1235-1935, page 140 list information, on Gilliepatrick McLugas or McLucas of Garrachoran in Glen Lean from a cadet of Knockdow in 1618.

Thank you Ken and George.  My maternal grandfather was a Luckey and his mother was a Brown.  Ken, somewhere I have some informatin on my segment of the Luckey family going back to I think the middle of the 17th century.  When I lay my hands on it, I'll forward it to you.  Every little bit helps.  Who knows, someday we may outnumber the Patricks.  biggrin

Jim,

That will be great. I have been working on my Luckey line for over 12 years. I have a few more insights than I did but still have not proved it. With some degree of possibility I believe I descended from a Robert Luckey that came from Londonderry Ireland in the early 1700's and settled in Lancaster Co. Pa.

Jim,

This is the Luckey I am researching as my possible 5th greatgrandfather. Its possible that Robert had two brothers named John and Samuel with father Andrew that came from Londonderry also.

I just hope my Luckey FT-DNA project will provide some help in the future also.

Hi Ken,

Your post is from back in 2009, but I just became a member of the forum today, so thought I'd respond with some of my research, hopefully not old hat to you by now. In researching my own name, Lokey, I found quite a lot in Black's Surnames of Scotland, pretty much the authority for this. I'll quote liberally from it:

Referencing my own name, I find on p. 156, "Clokie - A shortening of Macluckie" and "Cluckie (Wigtown) - A shortening of MacLuckie".

Researching "Loky and Lokky", found on p. 436 under "Lockie - ...derivation is from Luckie, from Lucas or Maclucas..."

p. 442, "Luckie - a diminutive of Luke...MacLuckie"

p. 443, "Luke - Families of this name long had connecton with Berwickshire...the name is also found early in Glasgow. Adam (p. 138) says the habitat of the Lukes was the shores of Lochfyne, and that they are an offshoot of the Lamonts. Some Maclucases Englished their name as Luke"

P. 539, "MacLucas (MacLugaish, MacLugash, MacLugish)...son of Lucas...Gillepatric McLugas acquired the hill steading of Garrachoran in Glen Lean, 1618 (McKechnie, Lamont, p. 140)...has also become Lucas in Argyllshire. Many persons have dropped their name Maclucas and have become Macdougalls in the north and Douglases in the south, and in Coll Lucas and MacLugais are now Macdougall. In the Isle of Man the name is current as Clucas. ...The Cowal Maclucases are reckoned a sept of the Clan Lamond. McGlugas 1692, McLucase 1609."

p. 539, "MacLuckie, MacLucky - corrupt forms of Maclucas...McLockie in the parish of Glastoun..., Galloway, 1684...George MacLuckie in Kippen. 1726...Donald McLuke in Shenlarich, 1644...McLokie 1684"

p. 539, "MacLugash, MacLugaish, MacLugish (in Lorn). Current forms of MacLucas..."

p. 539, "Maclulich, MacLullich, MacLullick..."

So, a lot of possible relations for you and me to research cousin. Doesn't get any easier wink

BTW, the first in my line in the American colonies is John Lokey, 1663, in Somerset county, eastern shore of Maryland. I am the first Lokey in my direct line not born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in almost 300 years (native Californian). The shore was settled from 1662- to the early 1700s by Scots-Irish, i.e. Ulster Scots, where, under the itinerant minister and missionary, Francis Macamie, from the Lagan parish in County Donegal, Ulster (but educated in Glasgow) they formed the first presbytery in America. Near as I can determine, the Ulster Scots I am descended from were first in Virginia (probably in Accomac county) and migrated north into Maryland because of the religious persecution they received from the Anglicans in Virginia (most of them were dissenting Presbyterians who had migrated from Scotland to N. Ireland and subsequently to the new world).

Good hunting,

Chuck Lokey

Hi Peter,

I have no direct info on Luckeys going to Germany from Scotland during the fifteenth century, however I do know that Scots migrated all over Europe as early as the fourteenth century, particularly as merchants and mercenaries. When the economy suffered in Scotland, as it did on a fairly regular basis, Scots traveled abroad. There are plenty of accounts of Scots fighting for most of the kings of Europe, including France, Russia, Sweden, Italy, the Baltic states (Hanseatic League) and of course the German states. Many times Scottish mercenaries formed the bodyguard of European kings and actually fought each other on the field of battle. Most of the time they stayed in expat communities during their tenure and then stayed on and were eventually integrated into the foreign nation in succeeding generations. I have some research somewhere that I'll email you when I can lay my hands of it, but of course it is general in nature, i.e. about Scottish migration in general instead of Luckeys in particular. I wrote a graduate school paper on Scottish mercenaries some years ago that I'll try to locate. No doubt you have Scottish ancestors. The difficulty is in finding the specific ones.

Best,

Luckey's please consider DNA testing to see if you have a common bloodline. This will help you focus your genealogy. it will confirm how close a relationship you have and how far back the common ancestor might be.

We have a Lamont DNA group and the Ken Luckey has a separate sub-group Luckey DNA. You can belong to both groups.

Both Ken and I would be glad to help you figure this out

Hello George,

I think a DNA Test is the best chance to find out if we have the common bloodline.

We can we make a DNA-Test and what we must pay for the Test.

Didn't realize you were supplying the link in your email. I opened it and scanned the information on DNA. Now what do I do? Can I coordinate a DNA package with you  for Lamont?

Thanks very much,

Chuck,

Welcome to Lamont Central, it's great to have a fellow member from Georgia aboard.

Thanks for posting your family history.  It's very interesting reading and confirms another spelling variation of Lucky.

Jim,

Thank you for the warm welcome. Are there any local upcoming events, highland gatherings, Burns Nicht, etc. in Georgia that Clan Lamont is participating in where I might meet some of my kin? I've only recently become aware of my Scottish roots, since my family always said we were Irish (like many of Scottish ancestry, my grandfather didn't understand the term Scots-Irish), so am new to this. Incidentally, I spent Christmas in Scotland with my daughter, who went to grad school in Aberdeen, Scotland and stayed to work and get married to a Campbell. Anyway, while driving thru the Dumfries and Galloway area of Southwest Scotland a couple of weeks ago, I was talking with another Campbell in Kirkcudbright, who told me that there are a lot of Luckies/Luckeys in the area. What can I say about the Campbell involvement? It's a family thing, now smile

Thanks very much,

I came here after searching for my lineage. I have a brick wall, a James Lucky (Luckey) born about 1802 in NC, moved to KY and is found in the 1850 census (some say in the 1840 census, but I haven't seen that one.) I know for sure that he is a gggg (How many?) grandfather of mine, but since the name was so common in the Luckey family from Lancaster Co, PA, I can't seem to figure out which family exactly. I think he's descended from Samuel Luckey Jr, son of Samuel Luckey Sr, son of Robert Luckey from Ireland.  That is based off of family hearsay, they've heard that the father of James was named Samuel.

I searched, and I cannot for the life of me find any children of Samuel Jr. named anywhere.  Is there a James, born around 1802??

I found another Luckey, William, who has much better chance of being the father of the James I'm looking for, because the dates match much better.  His will quotes that he has a grown son, James, with no children.  James would have been around 23-24 in 1825.

My big problem is that the James quoted in William Luckey's will has no child yet, and inherits a big bunch of land and possessions, while his possibly older siblings with children get a very small portion. Why would he move to Kentucky between 1824 and 1850? He married a woman, Elizabeth, from Kentucky, 14 years younger than he. That's why I've hit a brick wall. It doesn't make sense, I can't figure out a political or economical reason, and I see no crimes committed by this James Luckey. Also, why is his name spelled incorrectly in KY, when it is documented that he was literate? It has persisted, all the descendants today spell it "Lucky."

Hello all that are interested in the many different spelling variations of the Luckie surname. George brought all this activity too me. I have not posted to this forum in quite sometime.

This is the following url: for the Luckey Project along with all its variations. http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Luckey/

George and I would love for you to have your DNA tested and join both groups, Lamont and Luckey Projects. There is no extra charge to join other groups in the Family Tree DNA Project.

From my earlier post you can see my first ancestor to this country was probably a Robert Luckey from Londonderry. Ireland. I have lots of Y-DNA matches but none that share my surname even any with the other spelling variations.

Onychea,

Do you know of a male cousin with this surname that could test his DNA? This would be beneficial to both of us.

Hello together to
After a long time I once again on this page.
In 2011 I have a DNA test done at Family Tree DNA Project and signed up with Lamont and Luckey Projects.
Unfortunately, I have until now no new cognitions if my family and my name comes from scotland.
Sorry my english is not so good, and unfortunately, I can not understand the results of the Family Tree as well.
Recently I've given a new test in order, "Family Finder"!
Whether the test was a good choice I can not yet say.
The result I'll get in a couple days.
Best greetings from Germany
Peter Lukei

Hi Tom,
thank you for your nice reply.
Yes I know George Young for quite some time we have contact through Facebook.
On Facebook there is a group Lamont.
2 years ago I had Gorge where ever my DNA data and he wanted to look at sometimes.
But unfortunately they did not answer!
Perhaps the test was not as meaningful, the exact assignment is difficult.
I signed up even at the Lamont DNA Project / Luckey DNA Prjekt.

www.familytreedna.com/public/Luckey

But unfortunately I can not do with the result so much.
But I am really looking forward to the result of the upgrade.
best greetings
Peter Lukei

Peter. Don't worry about the English. It has been many years since I used my German. You would laugh if I did. We can understand just fine. We are finding more Lamont septs on the continent as we go along. I am part of the Lambie Rootsweb and the are several Lambie relations in Germany. Keep moving forward and welcome. George Young our senior President can help explain the results of the DNA tests.

Peter,

I also have not discovered any concrete evidence directly to Scotland either. You are the same Haplogroup as myself, R1b1a2 or shorthand R-M269.

However, I did discover thru the Deep Clade test that I do have a Celtic bloodline, a little further down the branch. I do match the Luckie gentleman is our Luckey Project but he has no more paperwork than I do, to take us across the big ocean.

Maybe the Family Finder will help you, please respond back to the forum if you find any results. I am glad you also belong to our Luckey project. http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Luckey/

Hallo Ken,
thanks for the reply.
yes I also belong to the group R1b1a2 R-M269 but 85% of men in euopa belong.
You need there already produce accurate samples to a connection.
It would be nice to know if my Familiy of Scotland Ireland or England is.
Let's wait for the next test from then we may know more.

Hi Ken,
If I could I would send you something roast, sauerkraut and Hefeweizen.
But the transportation is certainly not that simple.
But maybe you do time travel in Germany then I invite you to Sauerkraut and Hefeweizen.
best greetings
Peter Lukei

Peter, On a side note, I am proud of my German ancestors. My grandmother on my mothers, side was, Vanderburg, however the 1st ancestor of this line was Francis Funderburg. I don't know why the change of name. He is buried in one of the oldest Lutheran Churches in nearby Cabarrus Co. NC. I believe Funderburg is German. I know I love my brats and sauerkraut and hefeweizen! Weihenstephaner, oldest brewery in the world, one of my favorites. Ken

hello Kenneth,

a few days ago I received the result of the "Family Finder" of the Family Tree.
But unfortunately I did not learn many news.
By "match" me, some people appear to come mostly from England or Scotland.
The "Population Finder" shows me 100% from Scotland and England " (Orcadian)

best regards from Germany

Hello all. I just got my results of the DNA screening done by Ancestry.com , a gift from my son. I have not downloaded the raw data nor do I know what to do with it. Is it any use to anyone here?

This thread has apparently been around a while, but I thought I would add my two cents to it.

My great great grandfather, George McLuckie, left Scotland for Allegany County, Maryland in 1866. His son Alexander ended up in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where he died in 1930 at 48. There are other McLuckies in Western Pennsylvania, and doing a quick Google search for my cousin's apparently shut down website, there are lots more across the US and in Canada and the UK.

My wife is a descendant of the Mcinturners/Turners of Craigcoll, Argyll.

In 2011, we made a video "Tears In The Glen; the story of her ancestors (including their connection with the Lamont Clan. It can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/edit?video_id=TNd8K0B3S7s&video_referrer=watch

Please note the updates in the description.
