Scottish (also found in Donegal): Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Gille Mhunna ‘son of the servant of (Saint) Munnu’. This name, which is also found in the form Mundu, from earlier Mo-Fhindu, is a hypocoristic form of Fionntan with the affective prefix mo- ‘my’
MacGilleMhunna (son of the servant of Saint Munn). St Munn died in 635 AD and he is commemorated at Kilmun near Inveraray (Lorn) and near Holy Loch (Cowal). According to Black's "Surnames of Scotland", "A half merk-land of the territory of Inverquhapill was occupied in 1497 by a certain procurator (keeper) of the staff of St. Munn. Members of this old sept of unknown origin are often found mentioned in writs connected with Cowal, the scene of the saint's labors."

Thank you very much for this. I am new to this site, and just "stumbled" across your post. My father was a Munn from South Carolina, but I never knew him. I was adopted by Charles Lock at the age of five, and did not know I was a Munn until I was 62 years old! Funny thing was, I had a passion for all things Scottish my whole life!
Glad you stumbled upon us here Carl. You'll find that George and a few others here have much information to share.
Your comment on being interested in all things Scottish is facinating. I had the same feeling for many years myself before discovering my connection with the Lamont clan. I have talked to a few others about this same subject and it seems that if there is a connection, one feels the tug of Alba before one even knows about it. The urge to go "home" is great. God willing and the creek don't rise, I'll be doing just that this July.
