I know that the vast majority of Patricks in North America descend from the 4 sons of Hugh Patrick detailed in Dr Lee W Patrick's book. My family comes from a bit different line, which only arrived here in the mid-1800s (although my dad and Dr Patrick corresponded in the 1980s he thought we probably came out of the same family further back).
Here's a sketch:
The earliest I can reliably trace my line back is 5 generations to Robert Patrick, a tailor in Edinburgh, who was married at High Kirk Parish to Elizabeth Halliday on 4 May 1819, the daughter of John Halliday of St. Andrew’s Parish, and his wife Margaret Dow of Alloa.Although there are some tantalizing possibilities, there exists no known or provable record of who "my" Robert Patrick's parents may have been.
His son, John Halliday Patrick (my great-great grandfather), was born 11 March 1820, baptized at High Kirk Parish on 14 April 1820, and married 28 April 1841 at the North Albion Church in Glasgow to Mary Brouster, whose parents are not known. The 1841 census shows them living in Edinburgh at 29 Boroughloch Lane, St. Cuthbert Parish. They came to the USA in 1848, where he served as a Colonel in the American Civil War, but was killed leading the 5th Ohio Volunteers in the battle of New Hope Church in 1864.
His son John Henry Patrick was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1859, and was orphaned at age 4 when his father was killed in battle. His mother had died the year before falling down the stairs in their home. His older sister was married to a man named Carpenter, who raised him, but my great-grandfather was not in touch with any other siblings. We do have a nice charcoal sketch of "Uncle Walter" done in the same style as a pastel of John Halliday Patrick in uniform, but we know nothing about who "Uncle Walter" might be. Because neither of his parents were alive to pass along family histories, the very little he was able to pass on to my father was that the Patricks were a Highland family, and his grandmother's family were Lowlanders (which seems to make sense).
His son, my grandfather, is Walter Leroy Patrick, born in Ohio in 1886 and married Edna Viola Humphrey, also of Ohio, whose family we can trace back a couple of dozen generations to England, France, Holland, Wales, and even Wampanoags.
My Dad, Russel Walter Patrick, was born in Ohio in 1913, married Mary Virginia Gosser (family from Alsatian France), and lived to the age of 94.
I am Thomas Russel Patrick, currently living in suburban New York City. My son Seándor Thomas Patrick just got out of college and into his first real job.
I had heard there was a Lamont DNA test being done which I wouldn't mind doing, but all the links seem to be defunct. Anyone know more about that?
