George Hi. Thanks for the welcome. My mother always said the Feachnie's were a minor family belonging to the Lamont Clan. I'm trying to get hold of the book by Hector McKechnie, the Lamont Clan 1235-1938 to see if we're mentioned, but it costs £99 over here and is very rare! The Feachnie's or Fiachnai were originally a band of double dealing kings of Ulster in the 6th-7th cent. Segene mac Fiachnia came over to Scotland in the 7th cent, (presumably, to avoid all the back stabbing in Ulster !) and became the 5th Abbot on the Isle of Iona, but proving the link, if any, to our family and the Lamont Clan is proving somewhat difficult. Hence any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Ian.
Here's an update on what I found so far. Segene was the nephew of Lasren macFeradaig (3d Abbot of Iona) who was a descendent of Niall Niagiallad (who was Niall of the Nine Hostages). This is the Ua Neills that Clan Lamont traces its heritage to in Ireland around 540 a.d. By the way, St.Columba's given name was Colum-Cille also an Ua Neill descendent. So as far as I can see you are a Lamont. I am still digging to fill in more blanks. There are many steps between that I left out in this note. Welcome aboard.
This is great news. I've long suspected that Lamont may be connected to the Ionan abbotts. It was the only explanation I could come up with that could explain how the clan at one stage owned virtually all of Cowal. There is no royal connection that I know of (apart from two of the early chiefs marrying daughters of Scots kings), so my guess was that the land must have come from the church.
My guess was Sleibine mac Congaile mainly because I have a DNA match with a Slavens which looks like it derives from Duinnshleibhe, but it could also derive from Sleibine Mac Congaile.
So, Ian. Maybe I can talk you into a DNA test?
BTW, I live in Dunoon, Argyllshire and I think George arrives tomorrow for the Cowal Games. George runs the Lamont Family DNA project, and I've recently joined as a co-admin.
Glad I could open a few doors and answer some questions. I will continue to dig into this further. Maybe the reason the lands at Paisley (Kilfinnian) were granted is because of the earlier connections to Iona.
