Comfort Food From The Great White North.....Made Down South

I have been doing a little work in the kitchen , as well as in the shop, and decided I wanted to try a meal that I had often had when I lived up North. My grandma made pastys.....wicked good pastys, and I had been wanting one for a long time, the problem is I haven't been able to find a place that made them or sold them. The closest thing to one ( and is stil FAR off ) is a Hotpocket. So I tried my hand at it. I made two versions, a beef tip one and pictured below is a smoked chicken one.
Both had the meat, pan fried diced potatoes, onions, mushrooms, peas, diced carrots and where then covered with a gravy, chicked mushroom for the smoked chicken and a beef/mushroom for the beef tip one. The pasty itself is made from Bisquick doe and brushed with a seasoned butter while baking. All ingedients where cooked, then placed into the doe, folded over and placed on the pan. I cooked them at 350 degrees for roughly 15-20 minutes, then covered them with gravy.
Yummy.....but still not close to my beloved grannies!!!

I haven't had a good pasty in over a decade.

Those look great and sound better.

Eric, those do look amazing!  In the beef tip one, you might try adding rutabaga, it's the key ingredient in any Michigan U.P pasty.  BTW, if anyone finds themselves in the U.P., let me know, I know just about every place that sells a good pasty.  hungry.gif

I wanted to get some rudabaga, but unfortunately I couldn't locate any down here.
We used to get ours from a few different places in Mackinaw City as well and I found this link:
http://www.pasty.com/ But most of those places require a minimum of a dozen on each order. I plan on more experimentation.
