Today the U.S.S. New York, LPD-21,  set sail from New Orleans, her birth place, to New York City. She is composed of over 7000 tons of steel reclaimed from Ground Zero. They probably do not have a grog ration aboard!

Having been in the Navy for 15+ years (active and reserve) I can sorrily report - no. At least nothing legal. We now use chemicals to sterilize the drinking water and they call this advancement....

I've been following the USS New York for some time. I have a project where I have a flag from my active duty ship that flew during Desert Storm. I sent/take it to various sites, ships and monuments to be flown. So far it's been to about 40 some. One day I hope to add the New York to that list.

Jim,
My brother was in Desert Strom...He served on the USS Ranger.  He retired after 20 years and enjoys the civilian life.
