Planning a dress kilt outfit

This is what I think of when I think dress kilt to the 9's.

So this pretty much covers the list. The main difference is the tie. I personally like the longer tie to match the color of the kilt. I grabbed this image from http://www.tartanweb.com/shop/highland-wear/kilt-outfit-packages/prince-charlie-outfits/. Even in these outfits, the default tie that it comes with is a black bow tie. I really like the tie in this picture though since it looks like it is more of a scarf looking tie than a normal business tie.

Also this picture has a fly and broach that I think is cool, but is really not needed.(And somewhat of a pain to keep in the right place in my experience.)

wear your best, don't worry if you have the "complete" outfit. Wear what you have with confidence and nobody will care. I ave slowly added to my dress outfit and not worried abou it.

Thanks guys,

The pay I get from my "two weeks a year" is a fun money bonus in our house and it would be enough to cover pretty much all the above. I just want to make sure I strike a balance between formal and over done.

I started out with kilt No. 1 several years ago, then added the other pieces as I went along, I now have six pair of hose, four ties, four sporrans, four sets of flashes, three balmorals, two kilts and the third one on order. This doesn't include the jacket, waistcoat, tux shirt, bowtie, studs and cufflinks, kilt pins, cap badges , waist plate, belt, wing tip shoes and two fair sized plastic boxes to hold most of this stuff.

Beware kilts can cause a unquenchable thirst for accessories!

I agree with George, just start out with whatever works for you, the rest of the stuff will follow along.

My new kilt will be in the Brown Modern Tartan, since the Brown's are a sept of Clan Lamont. I think I can get away with wearing this kilt to a Lamont function. Maybe if I am lucky Mike will let me wear it in the clan tent.

Years ago I had a seamstress cut my old Class A ARmy Green jacket into a kilt jacket. I have a 1st Infantry Division patch on the right shoulder and my medals from VietNam bot no other Army insignia. I wear it with a tuxedo shirt and black bow tie or a 1st Division long tie, a fly plaide, kilt, Lovat Green hose and ghillie brogues. For headgear I wear either a Lovat Green Balmoral or a hand knit, hand felted tam in light blue.

I has worked for me since about 1994.

The gentleman definitely has his opinions doesn't he? It is a good read on the subject of kilts and seems like a good place to start. I will say that so times he leaves me a bit behind on names of garments but with it added to your advise it seems to be helping.

I get lucky in the outfit as Navy Balls are uncovered in that you aren't even suppose to bring one or at least check it with your coat. Besides that I'm trying to ovoid over accessorizing biggrin

I can see how you can get carried away with them.

Right now I am going with a kilt (the Navy one (Edzell I think), a Prince Charle's jacket & vest, ghillies, hose (white), flashes (red), black bow tie, rabbit fur sporran (black), miniture medals and maybe a sqian dubh. I decided to pass on the fly plaid.

I was curious though since; one a jacket is closed and two we wear a very wide belt with the kilts how do you put a cumberbun with it?

Never button the jacket and never wear a kilt belt if wearing a vest-the vest just doesn't "lay" right. Well, that's just my humble opinion. Sounds like you have put together a very proper kit.

Hi Drac.
If you are wearing the Kilt, waistcoat (i think that this is what you are refering to when you say "vest") and jacket then you will not need your belt, having said that, i always wear mine but the belt buckle is a military one so not as big as the Chrome ones, as for the cumerbund, NOPE, I cant ever remember seeing a cumerband on a kilt, with Trews yes.
my dress for black tie is this:
Kilt,
Hose (cream or lovat) with Flashes
brogues (black with long laces tied to the side)
Sgean Dubh (again, its an officers military one so really looks nice)
wing collar shirt
Black Bow tie
black belt and buckle (military dinner and buckle only)
waistcoat and prince charlie jacket (sometimes i wear the Argyll and "vest")
Minature medals on the left beast (if its that kind of function)
Dress Sporran (i prefer the leather strap rather than the chain)
cufflinks.

whatever you wear, you will look good and will attract attention.

I also never fasten the jacket with a vest (it has shiney buttons, show it off)

most of all, wear what you have and enjoy the evening

Drac, if you want to see a well turned out gentleman check out Kevin's intro post in the welcome room. Several posts down you'll see a pic of Kevin, my wife Sue, and myself. He's the one in the middle who still hasn't given me a satisfactory explanation as to why he has his arm around my wife. wink

Well wife just did the bills and the kit is back on. The Navy finally got around to paying me back for the expenses I ran up on my reserve duty.

I will be ordering the Prince Charlies jacket, ghillie broques, sash brooch (blue to match the kilt), a sgian dubh, Navy tartan flashes and a black rabbit dress sporran. I wasn't able to find a reasonably priced faux fur one.

With it will be my Navy kilt, fly plaid, natural hose, tuxedo shirt, black bow tie and mini medals. No covers allowed at the event. I am torn between a vest and a belt an buckle. I'll just have to see how they look.

The Ball is the 17th of October at the Fort Worth Stock Yards because nothing says Happy Birthday Navy like cows and BBQ?!?!?!?

I've got most of the gear in. They forgot the sash broach (coming) and I have to trade the jacket in for a larger size (but I've been losing weight).

Had to go on line to figure out how to tie the gillies but on a whole it seems to be working out. My wife likes the look better than the dress blues so that's a winner there. We will be getting pictures at the Ball so I'll show you how it turned out,

They looked like they were om his lapel. trust the other guy with lots of medals. He is very correct in his dress.

IMHO, they should go in the place on the left breast where you would normally wear them on your unifrom jacket.

However, the plaid complicates this issue, let me look and see if I can find some pictures of some of they guys I know wearing military miniature medals with a Prince Charlie and fly plaid.

I got the jacket through Sport Kilt. It's a nice jacket. I had to order a 48 when I normally ware a 44. I had it and the vest tailored.

I will say that I got a lot of looks and complements. I also got a lot of questions. One person asked if I was Irish. Most people couldn't place kilt with Scotland. After the 6th or 7th "Are you, ah, ah?" My wife said "Yes, he's Greek."
