This is the Lamont movie I got from Ellie Patrick at the Indiana Scottish festival.  It is an hour long documentary on the Clan Lamont.  It covered all the basics and has lots of footage in Scotland.  An Item like this might be nice in our scot shop.

Hey Moe,
Any idea where copies can be purchased?  What company/person/studio produced it?  I would love to have a copy.  Be nice to have it running on a little DVD player in a clan tent.

If DVDs can be made of the VHS, or if they offer a DVD, I would be interested as well.

there is technology to convert from VHS to DVD. Copyrights need to be considered.

Maybe Morris could write a book report for us biggrin ?

OK! I too would like a copy, so maybe it would be best to have our shop purchase copies if that can be arranged, that way we all can have a chance to own a copy.

The movie was made in association with Highland & Islands of Scotland, Intercity and S.T.B. Scottish Tourist Board...A Heritage Corporation Scotland Production in association with Grampian Television...The copy right is (1992) held by the Heritage Corporation.  there address is...The Heritage Corporation, 8 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2 Ireland.  Phone # 353 1 766616.  If they do not have this available anymore I will lend my copy to any one in our clan who is interested in viewing it.

Hey Moe, I've had a copy of this LAMONT documentary for about 10 or 12 years now. I finally got it transfered to DVD but not in time for the Blairsville,Ga. Games. I have a portable DVD player I was going to use if the DVD had been transfered on time. I watch this at least 3 or 4 times a year and before each Highland Games just to get pumped up!! We really do need to find the company who made this and see if they have copies or could make copies for us. Perhaps,if they are still in business, they offer this in DVD format now. Slainte!

Mr. President Sir its good to hear from you!  I will be checking this out to see if they offer it on DVD.  My buddy Jim (Michigan Commissioner) is checking to see if he can pick up a copy on his visit to Scotland.  Look for new post here…if its not available we can move to plan B.

The quality on the DVD copy I have is kind of rough but if y'all would like, I'll see if my friend Terry could make a few copies for those really interested in this subject. It really is good info about Scotland in general and has several very good points of Lamont history. I'll check into it.

Is that because of the quality of the VHS tape?

The Heritage Corporation in Dublin does not seem to exist any more. The latest reference to it that I have found is an article from 2003 mentioning the commercial failure of their file Dancing at Lughnasa. The article asks if this might spell the end of the company. Based on the age of these tapes it would be best to get them converted to DVD before the oxide falls off the backing.

Hey Rick, in answer to your question.....YES. The tape is old and has "run it's course" so to speak. Anybody out there with a good VHS tape of this should have it transfered to DVD ASAP before it gets too old. Rick, have you had a chance to watch the film yet?? If you get through the "bad quality" you can get a sense of what the presenter is conveying about our clan. MEW

I have had a chance to watch it.  Video quality didn't seem to be bad.   Sometime soon, I'll try to capture it in my video editing SW and put it on DVD.  Not sure when, but I'll try to make it soon.  Just have to figure out how to hook it up to my Mac.  There is a way, it's just been a long time since I recorded anything from a VHS onto the Mac.  (Don't have a  DVD recorder.)

PS - If I do put it on DVD, would you really want the tourist ads at the end on there?  wink

I'm working on getting a good quality copy on DVD, but it will only be for North America.

North America uses the NTSC standard for TV whereas Europe uses the PAL standard.  One can get a multi-regional DVD made, but I can't do that myself.  I may know someone who can tell us what it would coast to do that.

Hopefully, in the next few weeks I will make time to see how putting it on DVD goes.

I have this video and would be glad to give it up. It's in very good shape -- only played a few times. I wasn't entirely impressed with it. Quite a bit of the footage is generic and can be applied to almost any clan. (Actually I did see a version made for another clan and you can tell which parts were edited in to personalise it.) I would hope there'd be something better available by now. If not, maybe someone should put something together.

Yes, I agree.  It wasn't all specifically about Lamonts.  It struck me as more of a tourist video that included some info about a specific clan, but was really intended to get people to go to Scotland.  wink Not that that's a bad thing, but not what we'd want to be all there was to tell the clan history.

It would be nice if there was something better out there now.  Don't know of anything, though.

Thanks for the info on the NTSC format on the DVD. I have checked and my player is multi region so it should be ok.

To me it looks like one of those things from the games where they purport to give you "your" coat of arms and family history. In fact a sort of scam. I have seen several of this sort where the majority of the video is general Scotland with just a bit of info on a specific clan.

I have Mike's copy of the VHS tape.  I've been a little busy with some other things, but will get back to trying to get a good copy on DVD soon.

I've copied the VHS to Mini-DV, but just haven't had the time to put it in the computer and get it on DVD.
