1292 Summons of Warning
Permalink

An early written record of the Lamonts. You can see we are keeping pretty good company to be included with these leaders of the Scottish Highlands

The son of Malcom Mac Ferchar, Sir Laumon is refered to as Lawmund MacEreghere (MacFerchar) and his cousin Angus MacEreghere(MacFerchar) the son of Duncan MacFerchar. Both are grandsons of Ferchar MacNeil who was born on Isle of Barra and moved to Argyll.

The Alexander mentioned is Alexander of Argyll or Alexander of Lorne, also known as Alexander MacDougall

Angus McDonald is Angus Og (Lord of the Isles) Macdonald

The record appears to be when John de Balliol (c. 1249 - c. 25 November 1314) became King of Scots from 1292 to 1296. He preceded Robert the Bruce which is a story for another day about one of the first political mistake that the Lamont Clan made.

21 February 1292-3

SUMMONS of WARNING by King John of Scotland, for homage to be done to him.

John, by the Grace of God, King of Scotland, to Alexander of Argyll, his well beloved and faithful subject, and to his vassals of Lochawe, sendeth greeting.

We commend and direct by these presents, that, without any delay whatsoever, you cause summons of warning, to be served on Sir Angus MacDonald, Lawmund MacEreghere (MacFerchar), and Angus, son of Duncan MacEreghere(MacFerchar).

As to the matters that in any way pertain to us, they may be deferred till the fifeteenth day after Easter, when we shall be in Scotland, that homage may be done to us, and other things which by law they are bound to do.

And this they may not on any account neglect, nor you.

Witness our hand at Dundee, this 21day of Februrary, in the first year of our reign:
