I have 2 kilts ( an 8 yard and a 4 yrd) made from Lochcarron wool. I have noticed that my wool kilts made from Stillwater are alot softer and have more swish than the Lochcarrons.
 I know the Stillwater kilts wool is what I believe to be a 13 oz while the Lochcarron is a 16 oz, but still they are more "scratchy" than the considerably cheaper Stillwaters.
Any input?

Lochcarron makes fabrics in several weights, I have a 13 oz 8 yard District of Argyle/ Campbell of Cawdor tartan kilt  and a 16 oz 9 yard Ancient Lamont.  Both fabrics were made by Lochcarron.

Obviously the kilts made of 16 oz fabric are heavier, they do tend to have more swish to them.  The full 8 yard 16 oz knife pleated kilts are considered by many to be the most desirable.  Other than the weight, I can't tell much difference between the two kilts, the 13 oz fabric is more comfortable in warmer weather.  There are some days I prefer to wear the lighter kilt.

The tartan pattern is smaller in the 13 oz fabric, the same tartan will be larger in the 16 oz fabric.  For what it's worth many of the tartan ties are made of 10 oz fabric, Lochcarron also makes 10 oz fabric.

If cost is a consideration you might consider one of the 4 yard box pleat kilts made by Matt Newsome, he will make the kilts in either 13 oz or 16 oz fabric.  Many people like these kilts, including myself, they are historically correct.  Matt makes a top quality kilt.  He has a long waiting list.

The Stillwater kilts may be made of Merino wool, I don't have one, but understand they are an excellent product.

The Stillwater Heavy wool kilt is Merino wool. It tends to be softer than new Lochcarron. After a little bit of wear there is not a lot of difference in the wool. The Stillwater is an off the peg machine sewn kilt. My Lochcarron tartan is in a hand sewn made to measure kilt.The fit and swish are much better in the custom bespoke kilt.

Thanks Steve,
I recently aquired a "broke in" handsewn tank made from Locharron 16 oz, and it is really nice, It is my goto kilt for looking sharp. One thing I do know, I prefer 16oz over lighter weights, although I supposed if you have a true 8 yarder in a lighter weight you could have weight as well as a good swish going.
