I purchased my first kilt back in March of 2008 and since then I am the proud owner of 21 which are mixed between utility type kilts from Amerikilt, Unionkilt, Celtic Warrior Kilts, Apocokilts, and Alphakilts, and tartan kilts from Stillwater kilts, USA Kilts, Celtic Croft, and Frugal Corner.
 I have not been llucky enough to own a true Scottish kilt as of yet, but when I am ready to invest in a top of the line it will most likely be a Ancient Lamont tartan. I have the Celtic Croft version of the tartan and it is ok, but it is pretty light.
 For winter wear I love any of my SWK heavyweight wool kilt, especially my Weathered Lamont ( half sett).
 In my opinion the best kilt hose are  Lewis hose but they are pricey, I am usually in my What Price Glory British military kilthose. They are more within my price range ( $16 ) and are 100% wool.
 I am working on getting some tweed for my upper torso but until then I rely on wool sweaters, and sweatshirts.

 I am working on it, and it is a fun process. One thing is sure though, you can get addicted to kilts.

What different types do you have in terms of sport weight through Great Kilt?

I've always wanted a Great Kilt but haven't ever talked to anyone who owns one.

I don't have one of those, in fact this is the first I have heard of them. I am always on the look out for new companies. What style are you looking for a casual type tartan kilt or a utility type?

I have the tartan on the way to my home for my first great kilt. It is in the Albannach tartan. Mine will be five yards and no cheater pleats. i hope to post piccies shortly after I wrap it around me.

I got to see a pic of that tartan on Xmarks, looks cool. Have you always done great kilts or is this the first? Can't wait for your pics.
I just ordered a semi-trad in this pattern,


Its not a set tartan, its a medium weight cordoroy, but it reminds me of something you would see pre-Culloden. I talked with a fella that has one like it ( Barley Bird Kilts ) and he really likes it. I asked for a reverse kinguise knife pleated model, I'm jonesing.
The guy at Barley Bird will sew you a kilt for $60 if you send him material, I had to try it out.

I have a 16oz. four yard (well actually a five yard because of my, umm, well you get the picture) box pleat from Matt Newsome in Lamont Modern.  It's amazingly comfortable and a joy to wear.  I want to get a 16oz. knife pleat in Lamont Ancient soon.  I'm considering Scottishkilts.net.  The only thing I'm not sure about is ordering from a company outside of the U.S. in regards to postage rates and any import fees if any.  Having said that, their prices are pretty good.

It is my first great kilt. Also known as a very large (5 Metres) long double width piece of tartan fabric. I like the look of the tartan. I just need time to wrap it around me and get some pictures. Thursday is my day off. I hope to do it then.

Jim,

IMHO it is easier to order a kilt from a dealer or representative here in the USA and let them deal with all of the delivery and customs issues and charges.

Some of the companies, I beleive Lochcarron is one, have their kilts made in Canada, it apparently saves them a lot of headaches with customs etc. Burnett & Struth is another Canadian kilt maker with an excellent reputation for high quality kilts

One of these days I'll just have to try a great kilt on and see how I fair. I don't want to lay down that much cash and not be happy with it.

confuse Hey y'all.....want something that costs a little less?? Try this one:  www.frugalcorner.com  They have fairly good stuff for about a third most "authentic" places want. I got an evening sporran for Blairsville games for $45 instead of $150 -$250 from the other places. Works just as well, held my wallet and keys just fine for the Friday evening banquet. I'm like Eric, we are true "frugal" Scots! Another "frugal" site is  www.kiltmart.com  they are inexpensive too.biggrin.gif

Here are a couple of pictures, front and back, of my first great kilt that I got for our wedding in 1986. It was also my first kilt. 12 yards of Ancient Lamont. Lay it out on the floor on top of your belt, fold the pleats, wrap it and tighten the belt and you are done.

Eoin you wear it well ! Do you still have it?

I have only seen one other Lamont great kilt. When we visited the Culloden memorial, thay we holding a deminstration of how to wear the Feile Mor (great Kilt) in the visitors center. I asked the lady who was running the demo why the Lamont tartan. I had beleived the Lamonts were not at Culloden. She said she picked it out because it was beautiful.

I checked with the list of clans they had there and no Lamont's. Our numbers were very low and spread at that time period.
