The McSorley Lamonts were the oldest of the Cadet families, and were located just north of Loch Gilp, near Lochgilphead, on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne. They were styled Barons as early as the 1500s., probably because they were vassals of the King. They are believed to be descended from Duncan, Sir Laumon's uncle. This is an example of a Cadet family being descended not in the chief's line, but from a common ancestor. In this case, Farquhar, Sir Laumon's grandfather. In 1410, they were chartered by the Lamont chief, thus recognizing him as the head of the family. The name is derived from a Somerled (Sorley) of the early 1300s. The family continued until 1726, when, their being no heir, the land was sold to Coll Lamont. Not even a record of their Coat of Arms survives.
