The Old Manse Appeal
Permalink

When the sister of Sir Norman Lamont of Knockdow, Augusta Lamont passed away she donated her estate to the Clan Lamont Society of Scotland. The estate included the manse for the Inverchaolain church. THE Old Manse at Inverchaolain is the home of Clan Lamont where all our treasures history and archives are stored and where all clan business is conducted. Visitors can browse and trace family history amidst the peaceful surroundings and are always guaranteed a warm welcome and cup of tea.Alas Alas this beautiful old building which dates back to 1700 is getting tired although it has been completely refurbished in the last two years the roof has sprung a leak estimate for repairs is £18,000.  The president and council are appealing to Clan Lamont members; friends of Clan Lamont and to LAMONT’S WORLDWIDE for financial help to repair the roof.   Donations however small are welcome.

Donations may be made to the treasurer:

Sounds like a good fund raiser to get the Lamonts here more involved in our heritage over there. Mabe something official from the new Senior VP is in order?

Well we do need a good cause!

Let's pick one and make it a fundraising objective for 2009.

This sounds like a good thing for CLSNA to take part in.  Does anyone have pictures of the Manse and the treasures history and archives stored there?

George,

Can you give me a link to this website and the Kilfinan Church website, I'll post them both in my newsletter.

I have a couple of knives I have finished up if you would like to run an auction or raffle for funds for the roof.

One is what I call a GP (general purpose) Hunter, a 9" drop point made from S30V with stabilized kuri for a handle,  mosiac pins and stainless bolsters & thong hole:

The othe is one of my Gent's EDC (everyday carry), a 6" wharncliff made from CPM154 with mother of pearl handle and stainless pins & bolsters:

If you would like to use them let me know and I will contact some sheath makers to make some nice sheaths.  The Gent's could be made with a sheath that could be carried in a sock and the the hunter can be made with a sheath to fit over a kilt belt.

The hunter is a good over all knife for general field use (at least from feedback I've gotten) though the steel (S30V) does require a diamond sharpener to do the edge but the trade off is the steel holds an edge for a long time.  Record is 6 deer without sharpening.

The Gent's model was made to be carried in a suit and used without everyone running scared that you pulled a knife.  It's steel isn't quite as difficult to sharpen as the hunter's.

I'm a fine ether way. Let me know how you would like to handle it.

I'll check with the sheath makers.

Got a hold of one of the sheath makers.   Martin "Sandy" Morrissey is one of the best sheath makers there is.  He has been doing it for over 60 years and is one of the few leatherworkers who do nothing but sheaths.  Sandy's specialty is that he is one of the best carvers out there.

He will donate his time on the hunter making it with a 3" belt loop for a kilt belt.  If anyone has one they can donate to the cause he might be able to attach a clan crest to the front of the sheath.  It would have to be fairly small.

Still waiting for another sheath maker to respond.

Another sheath maker, Wick Ellerbe, has volunteered to make the sheath for the pearl handled one.  It will be a plain sheath to slip into the hose.

I also contacted a knife photographer, Jim "Coop" Cooper, who (if I can get it to him in time) will make time in his schedule to take photos for announcements.

The largest knife show is the last weekend of this month and it is all of these men's busy season.

Here is a web pic of the hunter.  The carry won't get back to me in time for a professional photo.

If you let me know where to mail it and what email you want me to send the full shot to I'll get them out.

On a more serious note, Drac, I can't wait to get my hands on that knife.  I should have it in a few days or so.  Really, I mean I'll wear it proudly but I just can't see myself using it for anything except showing it off to David, James and George...a lot!  You'll have to ask them why smile

I'm thinking of making some sort of a glass topped case so I can show it on the wall when I'm not wearing it.

Yes -Jim Rapin won the knife..... he even won the second place, we were going to diqual his ticket since it was not completely filled out.

I won't know the final amount we gathered until I hear from Mr Rapin on how much shipping and handling he is willing to pay. The more gloating he does the higher the S&H charge.... until then I am using it to chop up some soda cans for recyling.  it realy does a number on those cans.

Drac... how do you get those little nic marks off the blade??  did we tell Rapin it was a serated blade?

stay tuned for the final total but it was significant, even without somebody stuffing the ballot box.

I will post a picture of the other knife maybe this weekend, oh ya nobody in Michigan is eligible whose initials are JR

George,
Let me know how much the shipping is and I'll send you a check for the amount.  It's the least I can do for the Manse appeal as well as for such a beautiful knife.

As for a Michigan person with my initials winning the next item, I think my wife is going to join up and her name is...hmm...oh yea, Zelda Zmitch.

George,

You forgot to tell him where we put the handle up into before you boxed it up! Oh well, he will likely be able to tell when he opens it.

Jim,
Glad you won but remember this if it doesn't cut anything it's not a knifetears.gif If only the mail.

George,
Go a head and email me when you go to setup the raffle for the other knife and I'll see if I can get my knife making friends involved to help.  Also what is the story Jim is alluding to?
